The areca nuts or betel nuts, are the seed of the areca palm (Areca catechu) tree. The crop is mostly grown in tropical climates around the Asia tropical Pacific, Southeast and South Asia, and parts of East Africa. It is a highly profitable commercial plantation crop.
The nuts are mostly used for chewing, animal feed or for medicinal and colouring material. There are estimated about 600 million consumers of Areca nuts, particularly in South, East and South-east Asian countries. It is perceived to have medicinal values, including as an aphrodisiac, breath-freshener and with digestive properties. Chewing areca nuts is also quite popular in Taiwan.
In Indonesia, the crops are grown in almost all of the islands and are harvested year round. There are 14 provinces in Sumatra, Java & Kalimantan island in Indonesia that produce Areca nuts for commercial and export. The primary producer and exporter is from the Jambi Provinces in Sumatra island. In total, Indonesia exports 350,000Mt dry Areca nuts per year with a key market to South Asia countries.
There are many varieties of the Areca palm trees, in Indonesia there are at least 20 local varieties that are cultivated commercially, such as Betara, Bengkulu, Sumbar, Nifasi-1, Oyehe, Sumbar-2, Sumut-2 and Jaharun.
Betara variety from Jambi is now growing and the most popular variety. This variety has comparative advantages from its yield and productivity that produce 30 Kg kernel/tree/year or 7.8 MT dry kernel per hectare per year and also from the quality of the dry nuts. Betara Areca nuts also have bigger fruit compared to other local varieties.

Normal Split 80-85% Excellence
– Mixed Sizes (Big and Small) – Some dusty pieces – No Fungus or Rotten Pieces – Minimum Dark Red Pieces – Some Skin on some pieces
Grade B 70-75% Excellence
– Mixed Sizes, Mixed Qualities – Some rotten pieces – Brownish in Colour – Small Flower inside – Some Dark Red & Black Pieces – 25% of pieces have skin
