A major meat scandal has erupted in Malaysia, revealing a 40-year-old cartel's illegal importation of frozen meat from uncertified sources, including beef, kangaroo, and horse meat. The products, sourced from countries not allowed to export such food, were to be mixed with legally imported meat and stamped with fake halal certificates. The scandal involves bribed border guards and officials from at least four governmental institutions overseeing food certification. Between 300 and 400 containers of illegal meat, each holding 25 tons, were delivered to Malaysia daily. The government has launched an investigation and is examining both companies and individuals involved in the illegal meat trade. However, it remains uncertain if government officials will be held accountable for their involvement in the scandal.
