The Tamil Nadu state government is planning to expand seaweed farming and position the state as a hub for the seaweed sector. The government is taking an integrated, tech-savvy approach to benefit fishers, industries, and new entrepreneurs, and is planning a multi-purpose seaweed park with an investment of Rs. 1277.2 million. The park will boost technology adoption, improve the environment, and provide sustainable livelihood opportunities for coastal people. The government also highlighted the potential of seaweed farming for underprivileged sectors, especially women, and noted the difference between the current demand and production levels. The initiative has received support from the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu, along with various other agencies and research institutions.
